I watched the most fascinating programme on TV last night. The gist of the story went like this, one woman ( American)had two children, she was having problems with her husband and they split up. Not
being able to manage she applied for financial aid ( Income support in England) immediatly they applied for support from the father ( the equivalent of our CSA where do you think we got the idea from?) now over there they do things slightly different,it isn`t enough that you say you are the father when it comes to things like applying for access and so on,you have to have DNA testing. So they duly tested all parties including the mother. The shock was he was the father but she according to DNA testing was not the mother!! Understanably this caused quite a furore because now the authorities are trying to say that she obtained the children through other means. The mother of course knows she is the mother as she gave birth to the children, but how to prove it? The couple obtained the services of a solicitor who at first was completely flumoxed as to how he was going to prove what DNA testing had refuted. It had been discovered meanwhile that the mother was again pregnant. The solicitor had done his homework and insisted on more DNA tests being done but in different ways, they came back the same, she wasn`t the mother. As all this was happening the time came for the birth, there was a strong possibility forming in the minds of the proffesionals that the woman was in fact a Chimera. Which meant she had two distinct sets of DNA. When the baby was born there was a Lab Technician there at the birth to witness it and to take immediate samples from the baby and the mother, the first samples came back as matching, however they did a second set of samples a week later and they showed she wasn`t the mother!! This convinced them that in fact the mother was a Chimera. This was thought to be a very rare occurence,it happens when two eggs are fertilised and fuse together ( Siamese twins) but instead of the second egg developing as in the case of Siamese twins it is absorbed by the first egg leaving the child that develops with two sets of DNA. They have now discovered that the second set of DNA can be carried in only one organ in the body, but it can cause any babies carried by a female to have a completely different DNA to its mother. (It is possible apparently for the mother to carry the second set of DNA in the womb and ovaries) What is worrying the experts now is this. If the second set of DNA can be carried seperatly from the first set in a place that is normally not used for DNA testing how many rapists etc are out there walking free because thier DNA didn`t match the DNA taken from the victim purely because they are Chimeras??
This is not an isolated case there were two on the programme both women told they were not the mothers of thier children! How many Chimeras are actually out there they dont know but they do know it is a lot more than was at first presumed.
